seventeen journalists and managers of opposition owned newspapers in Turkey have been put on trial for allegedly aiding terrorism.

Ten of the accused persons have already been on pre-trial detention for nine months, and if found guilty, they could face sentences of up to forty-three years in jail.

Reports from the courthouse in Istanbul indicate that a large crowd of supporters let off balloons and called for the release of the journalists.

There was also chaos as the supporters tried to enter the court to witness the start of the trial.
