Keyamo says 774,000 jobs to go on as planned despite lawmakers tussle

Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo has insisted that the implementation of the 774,000 Special Public Works Programme will go on as planned.

Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria said this in reaction to the directive of the National Assembly to suspend the programme.

 

The Minister said the legislature has no power to issue directives to the executive.

 

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity,  had summoned the minister and the Director General of the National Directorate of Employment, Nasiru Argungu, to brief its members on the steps so far taken to implement the programme.

 

President had approved the employment of 774,000 workers to cushion the effect of the economic hardship caused by COVID-19, an arrangement, that allows for the recruitment of one thousand Nigerians in each Local government area, who will earn N20,000 each on a monthly basis for 3 months.
